15000 BTU RV Air Conditioner: Roof Load, Height and Power Before You Cut the Hole
 DATE: 2026-10-30 10:53:29 SHARE:

Most 15000 BTU RV air conditioner regrets are not cooling failures. They are installation decisions made in the wrong order: the unit was bought on capacity, the roof was cut, then the circuit turned out to be shared with a microwave. The U-Cooler4000Pro asks four questions of the vehicle before it goes on. Answer those first and the install is a morning's work.

1. Start With the Circuit, Not the BTU

The datasheet numbers that matter here are current, not cooling. Rated draw is 14.5A, maximum current 20.0A, and maximum input 2,150W. That means a dedicated 20A circuit and nothing else on it.

Two practical consequences. First, the unit ships without a plug, so the connection is hardwired or fitted with a plug by a qualified installer — decide before the cable is run. Second, on a 30A campground pedestal you share the supply with the water heater, microwave and converter. Manage loads sequentially; a 20A compressor starting while the kettle is on is how breakers earn their reputation.

2. The Roof Carries 35 kg — and Your Framing Carries More

Net weight is 35 kg (78 lb), gross 37.4 kg. That figure is static. Add dynamic load at highway speed and the framing at the cutout becomes the real question. The footprint is 29.18 × 27.23 inches: check that a roof rib sits under at least two sides of the opening, and add a backer frame if the roof is a thin sandwich panel.

A roof unit leaks at the cutout, never through the housing — use a continuous gasket, seal the fasteners, and check the condensate actually drains off the roof rather than pooling behind an awning rail.

3. Low Profile Is a Clearance Number, Not a Style

At 12.7 inches, this unit is shorter than a typical full-height rooftop air conditioner. On a Class B van or a truck camper that difference is branch clearance. On a caravan it is awning operation and towing drag. If the vehicle already sits close to a height limit, this specification decides the purchase — not the BTU figure.

4. What 15,000 BTU Actually Cools

Capacity is 15,000 BTU/h with 550 m³/h of airflow across three fan speeds. In practice, one unit handles a compact motorhome or caravan living area comfortably; a long fifth-wheel with large glazing and a bedroom behind a closed door will want two units or a ducted plan. Oversizing is less of a problem than undersizing here — a unit that runs flat-out never dehumidifies properly, which is why fan speeds and the remote thermostat matter as much as capacity.

5. Decide the Heat Question Now

The U-Cooler4000Pro cools only; the U-Cooler 3000 and 3000Pro are the models with heating. If you travel in shoulder seasons, plan a heater alongside the air conditioner so roof and circuit are designed once — our parking air heater range covers that side of the build.

6. Refrigerant and the Long Service Life

The unit runs on R410A with a 0.43 kg charge and a Panasonic rotary compressor. R410A is an HFC blend, and HFC supply is being stepped down under the AIM Act's HFC reduction program — worth knowing before a ten-year ownership. A major-brand compressor and a modest charge weight make servicing simpler.

Built by a Manufacturer With Twenty Years Behind It

KingClima has manufactured vehicle air conditioning and transport refrigeration since 2003 — over 20 years — with an annual output of around 70,000 units, a 7×24 after-sales team, and a range that runs from RV and camper air conditioning to truck and trailer cooling. The U-Cooler4000Pro is the U-Cooler4000Pro low profile RV air conditioner — 115V or 220V, 50 or 60Hz.

The Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Dedicated 20A circuit confirmed, with the plug or hardwire decision made
  • Roof framing verified at the 29.18 × 27.23 inch cutout, backer added if needed
  • Condensate route checked to the roof edge, not into a locker
  • Heating plan decided at the same time as cooling

Send us your RV model, roof photo and available power, and we will confirm fitment before you order.
